A winch is a mechanical device that is used to pull in and pull out wire, rope or cables with the opposite end typically attached to something. A winch can be manual, typically adjusted with a handle or automatically adjusted via electronic means.
The winch could be used to attach a hook clip to various environmental surfaces, such as pipes, allowing him to 'hang' in a vertical position and adjust the wind of the winch. Utilizing the winch, the player could slowly ascend or descend without forcing them to touch the ground.
2008: Red Mercury Plot Edit
Shortly before and during Sam Fisher's undercover operation in John Brown's Army during the Red Mercury Plot in 2008, he used a winch that was attached to a small, rectangular device fitted to the back of his uniform.
- The winch only makes one appearance in the Splinter Cell series as a usable gadget, in Version 1 of Splinter Cell: Double Agent.
- The winch is only available during the solo campaign of Splinter Cell: Double Agent (Version 1), it does not appear in the multiplayer mode, Spies vs Mercs.
- Using the winch could be another reference to the 1998 movie Mission: Impossible, where the protagonist, Ethan Hunt, uses a winch device similar to Sam's to descend towards an objective.
