Tom Clancy's Splinter Cell is a media franchise created by Ubisoft and endorsed by American author Tom Clancy. The protagonist, Sam Fisher, was a highly-trained field operative of Third Echelon, a top-secret NSA initiative. The success of the video game series spawned a novel series in 2004 authored under the pseudonym "David Michaels".

Splinter Cell, as a brand, is owned by Tom Clancy's company, Rubicon, and is licensed to Ubisoft to make the games. The characters of the game, as well as Third Echelon itself, were created by Ubisoft writer JT Petty.

Playthrough Length: The games vary between 10 and 15 hours for the main story. Completionists (people who enjoy doing absolutely everything in a game) may take up to 30 hours to find everything that the game has to offer. Pandora Tomorrow, Chaos Theory, Double Agent, Conviction, and Blacklist all feature a multiplayer mode that offers additional replay value.
Difficulty: Each game allows players to adjust the difficult level, from Very Easy to Very Hard. Playing this game requires the proficiency necessary to navigate and aim in oftentimes-complex 3D environments.
Security Concerns: Conviction and Blacklist both require players to sign into Ubisoft's Uplay network, a DRM (Digital Rights Management platform meant to discourage piracy and cheating. Some personal information is required (name, age, etc.). For security reasons, players need to create an account if they wish to access the game.

Community Attitude: The community can be competitive, but because the pace is much slower than that of, say, Call of Duty or Halo, attitudes are relatively low-key.

Content Labels: Violence: Splinter Cell is an action-stealth game. The action can be violent, players can choose to use guns, knives, or explosives to kill enemies. There is little to no gore. Players can choose how to approach situations. There is always a non-violent option and the game rewards the employment of such.

Adult Themes: The story's theme is global espionage. In Conviction and Blacklist, the themes get darker, broaching the subject of torture and kidnapping. There are many allusions to terrorism.

Language: All of the Splinter Cell games contain mild profanity.
